Check out the following commonly asked questions about camper van hire in New Zealand.
Do I need a special drivers licence to drive a camper van in New Zealand?
No, you don’t – a campervan can be driven with a standard full car licence. However each person who wishes to drive a campervan in New Zealand would need to bring their own valid original licence. If the licence is not in English, it is recommended to bring an international drivers licence along with it. These are issued in the country of residents. How old do I need to be to be able to drive a Camper van in New Zealand?
Usually at least 21 years old and you must have held a full drivers license for a minimum of 1 year. Some Campervan companies in New Zealand make exceptions to the age – however, terms and conditions in regards to Bond/excess and insurances may be different! Is there a minimum hire period to hire a camper van in New Zealand?
Yes, this is usually 7 days – and remember – all campervan hires are based on calendar days which means the first and last day of the hire count as hire days Some restrictions to minimum hire periods over peak season travel over Christmas and New Year may apply too. One way hires are often restricted to a minimum of 14 days. Check out the various companies as these terms vary.If I return the campervan early, do I get a refund?
No, you won’t – however you may be able to claim some unused portions back from your travel insurance. Travel insurance is strongly recommended in case of unforeseen circumstances. What equipment is included in my camper van?
ost campervans are fully equipped with bedding (duvets, sheets, pillows and covers and towels) and the kitchen comes fully equipped with cutlery, crockery, electric appliances etc – most have a Microwave included. What about a TV and DVD or CD player?
Well, my question back is – do you need a TV or DVD – you are here to enjoy the beautiful country New Zealand, but we understand that you may get bored a little bitIn these days and ages most Campervans are now equipped with CD players – cassettes are things of the past! Some bigger model Campervans and Motor homes (4 or 6 Berth vehicles) and most luxury Motor home versions have also inbuilt LCD TVs and DVD Players! What type of luggage to use?
Most vehicles differ from year to year and from model to model. We suggest bringing soft collapsible luggage with you as this is more easily storable – there is often extensive storage space available in 4 or 6 berth Campervans – but luggage space may be limited in smaller type vehicles. All of our vehicles differ from year to year and model-to-model, so storage in one vehicle can be very different to another. We suggest that you use soft collapsible luggage, or you can store the empty cases at most client campervan centres. How about young children travelling along on a Camper van in New Zealand?
Most 4 or 6 berth campervans and Motor homes in New Zealand have got 3 seats with seat belts in the drivers’ cabin. The NZ Law requires for all children less than 5 years of age to be restraint in a proper car child seat so when you book a campervan please let us know the age of your children if any are travelling with you so we can recommend the best option for you.We hope the above answers some of your questions you may have when you hire a campervan in New Zealand
