When it comes to vehicles, rust is commonly known as being a “cancer” because of the devastating effects it can have on a vehicle if left unchecked. Extra vigilance is necessary to prevent it from building up on older cars, because of its vulnerability due to the less advanced paint and body protection. While older cars are more susceptible to rust, modern cars are less worrisome and less susceptible because of the different materials that are used in modern vehicles.

Tne thing to keep in mind when talking about the importance of rust prevention and its treatment is that rust can and will compromise the structural integrity of whatever it is affecting. Rust can go below paint, and eat away at areas you cannot see. This makes it something that has to be periodically checked, more or less frequently depending on your environment. For example, salt from snowy roads in the winter will speed up the build up of rust.

One positive note is that since it is a slow, creeping disease, as long as you stay on top of it, you won’t have any problems. Surface rust is easily fixed with some good sanding and a proper paint treatment and/or rust preventative.

On the other hand, if you have purchased a used car and find some serious, deep rust that actually eats through metal, than you have your work cut out for you. To properly fix rust it must be completely eliminated. This means you’re going to be doing some serious grinding, sanding, and possibly welding. Rust holes on places like body panels and cosmetic parts of an automobile can be filled with fiberglass or bond, as long as there is not a lot of stress on the area. If there is any question of safety, where you want the job done right, you should invest in a welder. Fiberglass will eventually crack and become brittle, and steel will not. If there is any question as to whether or not a badly rusted part can be salvaged, you’re generally better off just replacing it.

It may seem like a lot of work, but managing rust is a critical part of your car’s overall health.
